Konkuk's Remarkable Challenge

Prime (Program for Industrial needs-Matched Education) project is a large project which provides six hundred billions won to universities which will adjust the number of students as a result of the demand of society and industry over the course of three years. This project starts with the intent of correcting human labor miss match (oversupply in social system and undersupply in engineering system).
Konkuk University (KU) was designated as a participant university to a large enterprise which provides fifteen billion won. About four hundred students will undergo changes which will directly alter their major at KU. In April, there was a controversy about the merging of the Film and Animation Departments. It is possible that KU will start merging many departments as a result of the Prime project. KU Prime project’s operation division of planning, however, is actively converging students’ opinion by Q&A (Question and Answer) in KU homepage which is a certain corner for the Prime project.
To provide more detail, the project will include a large number of reorganization plans. First, the college of KU Fusion Science-technology will come into being. It will contain the departments of Future Energy Engineering, Smart ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) Fusion Engineering, Cosmetics Engineering, Stem Cell Engineering, Medical Bioengineering, System Bioengineering, and Fusion Bioengineering. Moreover, the college of Sanghuh Bioscience will be established. It will be established by merging three independent colleges ; the College of Animal Bioscience & Technology, Life & Environmental Sciences, and Bioscience & Biotechnology. In addition, the College of Software Fusion will also be established. Lastly, the College of Engineering will be reorganized. The departments which are related to engineering but not included in the College of Engineering (Electronics Engineering Major and the department of Civil & Environmental System Engineering) will be incorporated to the College of Engineering.
Furthermore, the PLUS Semester System as one of the Prime Project will be applied by next year. It will not follow the standardized semester system, and instead will diversify grades and semester. In detail, there are “field placement 2+1 semester system”, “connectivity for recruitment 3+1 grade system”, “7+1 development of oneself semester system”, and “4+1 bachelor and master’s degree integration”. In summary, field placement 2+1 semester system means you can register additional major lectures in summer and winter which is vacation. Connectivity for recruitment 3+1 grade system means when you are senior, you are allowed to do field placement which will upgrade your recruitment possibility. 7+1 development of oneself semester system means you can get extra study credit and related scholarship by doing your own activity which is acknowledged by university. Lastly, 4+1 bachelor and master's degree integration means you can register some graduate school's lectures even if you are a senior.
On June 22, a briefing session of the Prime project was held. Many students, including every college’s president of students, attend the session. Their major question was about the practical support to own college. According to Min Sang-gi who is the chief of the Prime project, supports of scholarship will be the first support of Prime project, and every college will take benefits from the project. In the beginning, the College of Science and Engineering will be supported first, while the College of Liberal Arts, and other colleges will also be supported more gradually.
