Webtoon Inspired by School Life in KU
When a tadpole turns into a frog, it stays in the form of frog with tail for a while. This tadpole-frog is not a tadpole nor a frog but just an immature organism. Others do not care much, but Park Ga-eun (Department of Animation, senior) discovered a similarity between the tadpole-frog and herself, and started to draw a webtoon called “Tadpole-frog out of the well”. It is based on the true story of Park Ga-eun’s life as a student in Konkuk University (KU) and is presented in daily episodes. What is really interesting is that she drew her real-life existing friends as supporting characters like cats, fish, and ducks. The story mainly focuses on developing sympathy with readers. It comically deals with issues that university students are interested in, like classes, assignments, part-time jobs, and the drinking culture.
To gain a more detailed process of drawing the “Tadpole-frog out of the well”, we interviewed student-cartoonist who makes web comics Park Ga-eun. She said that she chose a short daily genre rather than long story genre because she wanted to draw efficiently during school terms. “To find materials for the weekly episodes I got into the habit of eavesdropping on friends chats or asking friends about interesting experiences.”, she added. Ga-eun also often checks readers’ comments and decides about the story’s progression. She said that especially negative responses come to her as an important feedback. “For example, I drew a Brocoli character who was very mean but I soon removed it as some readers expressed displeasure about the character.”
Thanks to this experience, Park Ga-eun recently attended Korea-China-Japan New Cartoonist Contest and won a gold award. She said that she was able to win because of the extra points she got for quickly completing the scripts and turning in more drawings than other competitors. For the future plan, she mentioned that she is preparing for a new story genre webtoon after she finishes “Tadpole-frog out of the well” next February when she graduates. Therefore, she hopes that if she keeps on moving forward, some day she would become a popular cartoonist and create a webtoon that many people can enjoy.
