Tanghulu is on the trend among the young generation. Emerging from cooking videos and mukbang videos on YouTube and TickTock, it is a snack eaten especially by young students. It is a traditional Chinese snack made from hawthorn fruit with a sugar coating. It features the crunchy texture of the sugar coat and a super sweet taste. Already five Tangulu specialized stores have opened near the Konkuk University Station.
However, the sugar coating of Tanghulu is bad for people’s teeth. The sticky sugar syrup, which is not easily removed by brushing teeth, has a high Caries Risk index. In addition, the issue of sugar overconsumption as a problem is also emerging due to Tanghulu. It contains a large amount of sugar, including the sugar from fruit and sugar syrup. For young children, the recommended sugar intake is low, so eating just one can exceed half of the recommended intake. Even the simple sugars in sugar syrup can cause diabetes and obesity. Recently, the CEO of Wangga Tanghulu, a representative Tanghulu specialized store, was called for a government audit due to the issue of overconsuming sugar.
In fact, we have been enjoying delicious food filled with sugar for a very long time, from dalgona to sweet macaroons. So why is Tanghulu such a serious and important issue? Because it is becoming popular among children and spreading through SNS. Not only fruits but also jellies and marshmallows are coated with sugar, and even peppers and hams are not excepted. Influencers are uploading monster versions to SNS and people send Likes and Subscription. So children eat Tanghulu out of curiosity and become addicted to the sweet taste. And they will soon discover something else provocative and trending on SNS, not only food but also language habits, behavior, and song lyrics.
Most SNS are in a scroll format. If you keep scrolling through the pages, anyone can watch parts of dramas that are not suitable for teenagers without adult verification. Also, some in SNS do not think about whether the meaning of the lyrics hidden in the beautiful melody are ethical or not. They just do the challenges. SNS has connected people more closely. But when we follow the algorithm, we don't know what we will see. Who knows? In the future, people would say Tanghulu was better.
