The Emergence of Gender Populists and the Crisis of Representative Democracy in an Academic Play

The 48th Janganminguk mock national assembly was held on November 24, 2022, at the Prime Hall of the Student Union Building. It, hosted by the Department of Political Science at Konkuk University, is an academic play that looks at social issues through the eyes of young students and finds alternatives. This time, it was held face- o-face for the first time in three years under the theme of <The Emergence of Gender Populists and the Crisis of Representative Democracy>. Professors from the Department of Political Science, including Professor Bae Youngja, and alumni President Lee Sun-myeong attended. Student council President Cho Young-bin of the Department of Political Science said, “Gender conflicts can be sensitively accepted, but we have never given up and proceeded. This is because we think this topic is a problem that must be dealt with now and this is the reason for the existence of the mock national assembly.”  Gwangjin-gu Assembly Chairman Chu Yun-gu and National Assembly Member Go Min-jung regrettably could not attend, but sent  congratulatory videos to encourage the mock assembly.
Janganminguk is a fictional country with a national assembly composed of two parties, the Jangan Party and the Minguk Party. When the President is worried about a falling approval rating, the chief secretary proposed a “high-ranking officials female quota system” as a means of rebounding the approval rating. He said, “The young generation is stupidly sensitive to the justice related to entering society. We can win the vote by social splitting using the primary human characteristic like gender.” Accordingly, the Jangan party insisted on a female quota system for high-ranking officials, and the Minguk Party opposed it and proposed to abolish the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.
The Jangan Party compared the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family to tooth decay and stated that the abolition of the authority is nothing but the political populism of the Minguk Party. The Minguk Party argued that the authority is losing public trust, and also gender equality was not something that only the authority can handle, so the authority’s function should be divided into several departments. Both parties blurted the essence of their political stance and ignored the problem, instead blaming each other. In this process, the limitations of representative democracy, in which minority opinions are ignored and meaningless policies are put forward to win votes, were revealed.
The play aroused sympathy from the audience by introducing the provocative political YouTuber and internet communities that deepen the conflicts. In addition, they induced the audience to respond with applause, focusing the audience on the play. After the play, they conducted a lucky draw event where they gave KU dolls.
The actors showed enthusiastic performances, and the content was realistic, making the audience think a lot. It is so anticipated to look forward to the next Janganminguk mock assembly
