The Palestinian militant group Hamas began to attack Israel

The 2023 Israel-Hamas war began on October 7, 2023, when the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched thousands of rocket attacks targeting southern Israel. “We declared Operation Al-Aqsa Storm and fired more than 5,000 rockets in the first attack within 20 minutes,” stated the Hamas military commander Mohammad Dif on Hamas media. Following Hamas' surprise attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu officially declared the start of the war in a statement. He named the operation to respond to Hamas as an "iron sword" and launched a massive retaliatory strike by mobilizing fighter jets. The armed conflict between the two sides, which escalated due to airstrike on Israel, has continued since Israel's founding in 1948, and tensions between the two sides have increased further due to the far-right policies continuing since Netanyahu returned to power at the end of 2022.

Meanwhile, the leaders of the United States, France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement on October 9, calling the Hamas' attack on Israel a terrorist act and condemning it. However, the situation in the Middle East is expected to become increasingly complicated, as suspicions arise that Islamic Shiite organization such as Hezbollah behind Hamas, and Saudi Arabia has declared that they will side with the Palestinians. Palestinian militant Hamas launched thousands of rocket attacks on southern Israel on October 7, and Hamas militants used paragliders to cross the separation barrier and penetrate Israeli airspace directly. They attacked civilians with machine guns in 22 southern Israeli regions facing Gaza and held dozens of Israeli soldiers and civilians hostage in Gaza. Israel has also launched a massive retaliation against Hamas’ attack, further increasing the number of deaths on both sides.

Additionally, the Israeli military suspended electricity, fuel, and food supplies to Gaza and ordered residents of seven regions in the district to evacuate to pre-designated places. Alongside the 31 battalion troops stationed on the border of Gaza, they also issued a general mobilization order for reserve forces and deployed four division forces and tanks for ground operations.

However, the controversy is likely to escalate as Israel's intelligence organization Mossad, which has boasted the highest level of intelligence during Hamas' massive raid, failed to gather information in advance. And Israel's proud missile defense system, Iron Dome, was found to have been breached. In addition, on November 22, the Israeli cabinet approved a deal to temporarily suspend for several days to release hostages captured by Hamas.
