The festival that made students “CURED” from COVID-19 Blues

Due to the worldwide spread of COVID-19, Konkuk University’s Festival was postponed and it was difficult to see how the Fall Festival could be held offline. Thus, the General Student Association (GSA), “To Twenty”, has prepared an online culture week from October 26 to 31. The purposes of the festival, “CURED”, were to cure students’ exhausted minds and to have a time for students to communicate with each other through online activities.

The GSA prepared different programs for every day of the culture week. For lectures, “Sang-Huh Scholarium”, “Talk Myself”, “Konkuk Sketchbook TURNING POINT”, and “U&I KUKU Spheres” were prepared. The talk concert “Talk Myself” was held with lawyer Jang Cheon from the TV program Heart Signal 1(2017), singer and actor Lee Ki-chan, and three students who won a speech contest. Students who were not selected could listen to speeches via Zoom. Unlike other normal talk concerts, the talk show “U&I KUKU Spheres” was interactive with the listeners. Comedian Lee Sang-jun, the talk show guest, was given topics and questions previously collected from students. KU Sketchbook was a program with alumni talking about campus life, dreams, and jobs. It had two guests, SBS announcer Kim Yun-sang and veterinarian Seol Chae-hyeon.

The GSA also prepared many classes such as a magic class, a drawing class, and “Believe It Or Not”. The magic class, led by the famous magician Choi Hyun-woo, had a big competition to get into it because it had a 90 student limit. The drawing class was also successfully held with 90 students, providing tips for hand drawing. “Believe It or Not” was a tarot course which aimed to make tarot a hobby by creating continuous interest and get students to have fun with others.

A quiz contest, KU Golden Bell, was also held. Especially for KU Golden Bell, there were much more applicants than needed so the GSA randomly selected participants. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., KU Golden Bell had 4 rounds of questions to pick out the winner for an iPad. There were also many students watching the program online because a well-known host Kwak Min-seon from SPOTV Games was on the program. There was also a concert “KF Healing Verse”. KF Healing Verse was a concert streamed online through Zoom and Youtube, with Kyu-Hyun and Rooftop Moonlight singing healing songs to relieve students’ stress.

Other activities such as “OOTK (Outfit of the Konkuk)”, “Save Rented Homes!”, “Miracle in Konkuk University’s General Store”, “A Dictionary of Mysterious Restaurants”, and E-sports competition were also held. The fashion show “OOTK” led by fashion YouTuber QYoung had two sections, fashion contest and fashion coaching program. “Save Rented Homes!” was programmed after the famous TV program Where is My Home (2019), and provided tips for cleaning and decorating the interior of students’ rooms. In addition, “Miracle in Konkuk University’s General Store” was a program especially designated to the meaning of the theme “CURED”, which provided students with knowledge on how to maintain proper mental health in this era of COVID-19. “A Dictionary of Mysterious Restaurants” was the only face-to-face program during the culture week and had freshmen and seniors visit famous restaurants around KU and share reviews. Despite the early hesitation from students, the first online festival of KU has successfully ended with lots of students’ support.
