A lot of support is needed for a better school life, from software to self-development activities, and sometimes counseling for emotional management. Konkuk University offers various services to meet these needs for students. Are you paying for a service that is available for free, by any chance? These offers are not well known that even many upper grade students cannot make the best use of them. This article will introduce supported software, useful service for self-development, and an institution to look for when in need of mental help.

1. Charged software that can be downloaded for free

Windows 10 EDU - https://konkuk.onthehub.com

The widely used Windows OS is essential for using computers but the genuine Windows 10 Home product costs about 200,000 won. KU supports free upgrade to reduce this burden. Confirm school emails at KU’s OnTheHub site, register, and log in. When you put Windows 10 in the cart, which is the first thing that pops up in the list of programs, you can get a product key for Windows 10 EDU.

Tip

You need to have Windows downloaded for this free upgrade. If you do not have Windows installed, you can download a limited version of it on the USB from Microsoft website. Make sure to back up in advance because the computer is initialized when you install Windows.

Office 365 - https://www.microsoft.com/en-ww/microsoft-365

Office 365 is a collection of programs that are used a lot when doing assignments. You can install it immediately by simply logging in on KU website without any authentication or registration procedures. You can also work within the webpage without installing Office 365 on your computer. This makes it easier for students with small storage computers to use the programs. Since all the files are stored online, it is also easy to use backed-up files without having to transfer them when using a public computer.

Hangeul

Hangeul is a program that is often used with Microsoft Word to write reports in Korea. Unlike Office 365, it is not available for online download. If you bring your student ID card and an USB drive to KU Information and Communication Office (Engineering Building B 168), you can receive the program file on your USB. Several versions such as 2020, NEO, 2014, and 2010 are offered. Unfortunately, Hangeul for Mac is not supported.

Other provided software can be found on the IT service page of KU Information and Communication Office site. Software includes MATLAB, which is used for numerical analysis, virus vaccine program V3, and so on.

2. Service that can help you with self-development

School digital library

https://yes24-seoul.konkuk.ac.kr/

If you log in as a KU student, you can check out eBooks for free in Kyobo Book Centre and Yes24. You can borrow up to five books and read them for seven days. You can also reserve up to three books and check out first when the books are stocked. The content detail page shows how many books are stocked in total and how many books are checked out or reserved.

Tip

It is a little easier to borrow books in Yes24 because there are fewer users than Kyobo Book Centre. Digital library for Glocal campus is also available for Seoul campus students.

Paper search

You can search theses by using the Sanghuh Memorial Library digital data search or using thesis searching sites such as dCollection, RISS, and NDSL at the bottom of the school library site. When logging in as an institution member, papers with a fee are available for free.

KU Language Institute

The Language Institute provides programs to learn various languages: English conversation, TOEIC, JLPT, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, and French. Foreign language scholarship students can take lessons without program fees. A deposit of 100,000 won is required for class confirmation but a total refund will be made when you attend classes for more than 80 percent of the time.

Tip

Some programs offer Konkuk University Mileage (KUM). There is a chance to receive KUM scholarship (500,000 won) if you get in the top 60 people with the most KUM. The cut-off amount of mileage varies every year, but it is commonly known to be in the 500s.

KU Language Institute Extracurricular programs - https://wein.konkuk.ac.kr/

Various extracurricular programs such as special lectures, mentoring, and group counseling are available on the WE:IN website. The programs are largely divided into fields such as education, industry-academic cooperation, and research. Each program has different schedules, so it is recommended to look at the list of programs in advance and apply for what you want. In addition, there are also competency-building programs for students in certain departments like Philosophy and Contemporary Art. It would be good to find if there are any programs related to your department.

3. Counseling for emotional management

Student Counseling Center - https://counsel.konkuk.ac.kr/

Starting with psychological counseling, various counseling services such as job/career counseling and academic counseling are provided. Professional counseling services that need to be paid can be easily received for free at KU. Counseling may be applied by calling the Student Counseling Center (02-450-3019). Due to COVID-19, all consultations are proceeded via phone calls.

For peer counseling, there is a list of supporters you can check and choose from on the Student Counseling Center website. If you have worries about academic, career, and relationships, you can talk comfortably with friends of your age and even in the same college.

WE:IN

Professor counseling allows a personal counseling by designating a professor in charge of the department and can be applied through the WE:IN website. If you enter the application page, there is a calendar with dates available for the specific professor. After selecting a date, write down what you want to consult, and the counseling will be approved. If this counseling system is used well, it will be a good way to talk in depth with professors about department-related curricula, academic achievements, and career paths that are difficult for general counselors to guide.
