The Golden Globes, which has a long history since 1944, is a famous award-winning ceremony for movies and dramas around the world. It is selected by a vote of members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which consists of newspapers and magazines from around the world. However, the Golden Globes has been embroiled in a lot of controversy over racial discrimination recently.

In 2019, a corruption scandal broke out in a report by the Los Angeles times (LAT) ahead of the 78th awards ceremony in February. Right after this, another issue arose. It was revealed that none of the 87 members of HFTA are black. In addition, the movie <Minari> (2020) was excluded from the nomination for the award and classified as a foreign language film. “Minari” applied different standards because the director and actor were not white even though it was made by an American director and an American production company. Also, actor Scarlett Johanson said the Golden Globes made sexist remarks and sexual harassment questions and expressed the urgent need for a boycott. Actor Tom Cruise even returned three awards he received from the Golden Globes.

The Golden Globes poorly opened this year due to a series of boycotts by large agencies such as Warner Brothers, Netflix, and Amazon Studio. Without NBC’s broadcast, it held a “forced” private event and there were a lot of vacancies only broadcasted on Youtube. The production crew and cast of the “Squid Game” which had been very popular recently, were also absent from the awards ceremony despite being nominated for various categories.

HFPA claims that internal reorganization has been carried out since last year’s awards ceremony. It reorganized the board of directors, recruited 21 new members, including six black reporters, and updated the code of conduct. Chairman Honny said, “This year was a year of change and reflection in HFPA.” However, Hollywood’s response is still cold.

Is HFPA seriously aware of the racism problem? Or did they make minimal efforts to overcome their crisis of existence? The issue of racial and gender discrimination continues to increase in importance. Even the Golden Globes, called on of the two major awards ceremonies, continued to intensify inequality without recognizing its importance. Nothing changes if no one speaks out. Someone should constantly voice and urge change. The subject must be “us.” In order to create a more equal world, we have to change one by one. These changes must take place not only in the film industry but also in a wider and more diverse field. Only the will the world that we all long for come earlier.
